(Vinton, La.- Delta Downs - Don Stevens) - ALLEN LANDRY TRAINEE SCORES SECOND STAKES WIN OF HER CAREER -
VINTON, LA. – Delta Downs hosted the $100,000 Louisiana Jewel for 2-year-old Louisiana-bred fillies on Friday night, and all eyes were on the talented and undefeated Cajun Caviar under jockey Casey Fuselier. The Allen Landry trainee came into the race as the morning line favorite after breaking her maiden on August 21 and then winning the $75,000 Louisiana Cup Juvenile Fillies Stakes on September 19. Each win was by more than two lengths.
In the Louisiana Jewel, Cajun Caviar broke alertly before settling in at the rail while stalking the pace set by Wicked No Mo and Romantic Rumor, who clicked off fractional times of 23.28 seconds for the opening quarter mile and 48.03 for the half mile. As the field raced up the backstretch, Cajun Caviar found room at the rail and moved up to engage the leaders heading into the second turn.
With just over a furlong to go, Wicked No Mo threw in the towel and began to back up as Cajun Caviar and Romantic Rumor faced off heading for home. In the final furlong it was Cajun Caviar who would not me denied as she pulled clear late to win by two lengths over Romantic Rumor while My Hintof Platinum rallied for third, another 2-1/2 lengths behind the runner-up. Cajun Caviar finished seven furlongs in a time of 1:28.16 while running over a fast track.
Cajun Caviar earned $60,000 for her second stakes tally and now has a bankroll of $129,000. She is owned by Ellen Epstein.
Bred in Louisiana by Ellen Epstein and Lynne Boutte, Cajun Caviar is a dark bay or brown filly by No Parole, out of the Violence mare Clearly Sailing.
Sent to the gate as the heavy favorite, Cajun Caviar paid $3.20 to win, $2.40 to place and $2.20 to show. Romantic Rumor was worth $6.60 to place and $4 to show. My Hintof Platinum returned $6.40 to show.
