Louisiana-Breds Take Center Stage as Hernandez Sweeps Four Stakes on Louisiana Cup Day
Louisiana Downs turned in one of the best days on its calendar Saturday, as Louisiana Cup Day showcased six $75,000 stakes for the state's thoroughbred breeding program — and one jockey made sure his name was attached to most of them. Harry Hernandez, in his first year riding in Louisiana, won four of the six Louisiana Cup stakes, a performance connections and fans won't soon forget.

Hernandez opened his day aboard Mo for Us in the Louisiana Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, sending the Mo Tom mare to a 5½-length win in 1:11.34 for trainer Steve Asmussen. The 5-year-old, who paid $13.40 to win, pushed her record to 7-4-5 from 21 career starts and $373,475 in earnings.

He followed that with an upset in the Louisiana Cup Sprint aboard Mangum, sent off at 4-1 and getting past favorite Benji Star, with Achromedoutcat and Sounds Like Power rounding out the minor awards.

In the Louisiana Cup Juvenile, Hernandez and trainer Patrick Devereux, Jr.'s Star of Bethlehem never saw daylight, going gate-to-wire for a 5¾-length win at 9-2 odds, paying $11.80 and pushing the colt to 2-for-4 with $83,600 banked.

His day — and the card's headline moment — closed with Star Rock Star in the Louisiana Cup Turf Classic (1 1/16 miles), a Star Guitar gelding trained by Shane Wilson who broke the track record in 1:41.76 on firm turf, paying $3.40 to a well-backed crowd. It was the fourth Louisiana Cup trophy of the afternoon for Hernandez, who credited his team afterward for "all the opportunities" in his first Louisiana season.

The two stakes that got away from him still made for compelling racing. In the Louisiana Cup Distaff, 2-5 favorite Highly Wicked, a 6-year-old Wicked Strong mare trained by Sam David Jr., cruised to a 4¾-length win in 1:42.79 under Marcelino Pedroza Jr., extending her record to 15 wins from 27 starts.

And in the Louisiana Cup Juvenile Fillies, even-money favorite Cajun Caviar rolled to a 2¾-length victory under Casey Fusilier for trainer Allen Landry — a filly still undefeated in two starts, and notably the first stakes winner for Louisiana sire No Parole.
Off the track, the day carried its usual community touch: the Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association and Louisiana Downs each awarded four $1,000 scholarships to full-time college students following the fifth race, with LTBA's Roger Heitzmann noting the event "showcases the quality of Louisiana's thoroughbred breeding industry and we were thrilled to award these four scholarships."
Between the record-breaking mile-and-a-sixteenth turf performance, a red-hot young rider claiming four of six trophies, and a new stakes-winning sire on the board, Louisiana Cup Day 2026 gave the state's breeding and racing community plenty to celebrate heading into the fall stretch.
