NORAH G WIRES THE FIELD IN $60,000 EVD DISTAFF

LUVY VICTORIOUS IN THE CREOLE LADY

POWDERED SUGAR GETS RAIL RIDE TO WIN THE CAJUN MISS

OPELOUSAS, LA –Norah G took command early and splashed home an easy winner in the $60,000 EVD Distaff at Evangeline Downs.  The Friday card featured a trio of stake races for Louisiana-bred fillies and/or fillies and mares.  Steady rain began falling just before the Cajun Miss and led to different track conditions throughout the card.

Norah G

Norah G broke sharply with jockey Emanuel Nieves and never looked back in a front-running score to take the $60,000 EVD Distaff.  The race for fillies and mares 3-years-old and upward was contested at the distance of one mile over a track listed as wet-fast.

Norah G was hustled to the lead in the early yards and was able to open a clear advantage in the run into the first turn, while favored Clearly a Test and Jet Rocket were asked to settle off the early tempo.  The fractions were steady, but not flying as Norah G went through the opening quarter-mile in 24.09 seconds and the half-mile in 47.90.

The advantage for Norah G increased to four lengths as the field moved into the far turn, with Jet Rocket and Clearly a Test chasing in vain.  Through six furlongs in 1:12.82, Norah G maintained the advantage and looked in complete control.  Nieves and Norah G were never threatened and cruised under the wire three lengths in front.  Jet Rocket was able to hold for second another 1-1/4 lengths ahead of Clearly a Test.  The winning time for the eight furlongs was 1:39.44.

Norah G is a Patricia West trainee and wins for the sixth time in 18 career starts.  Owned by Thomas Galvin, she collects $36,000 in the victory and increases her lifetime earnings to $303,686.

Bred by Tom M. Galvin, Norah G is a 5-year-old grey or roan mare sired by Fast Anna.  She is out of the Malibu Moon mare Mr. G’s Moonshine.

Norah G returned $13.40 to win in the minor upset, $6.20 to place and $4.60 to show.  Jet Rocket paid $5.80 and $3.60, with Clearly a Test paying $3.40.

Lucy

Luyv rallied strongly in the stretch to capture the $60,000 Creole Lady.  The race for fillies and mares 3-years-old and upward was contested at the distance of 5-1/2 furlongs over a track listed as fast-sealed.

Miss Priority was away in good order and sprinted clear in the early stages of the Creole Lady, with Flashy Meg, Won Day and Luyv in close attendance.  The opening fractions were quick, with Miss Priority whizzing through an opening quarter-mile in 21.80 seconds.  As the field made their way to the top of the stretch, Miss Priority was clear with Won Day moving forward with a wide bid, while jockey Tim Thornton and Luyv began to make progress on the rail.

Straightening away Miss Priority was the leader, but Luyv was getting into gear with Won Day and Six String joining the battle.  In the final yards, Luyv spurted clear and made it to the wire 1-1/4 lengths ahead of a dead-heat for second between Miss Priority and Six String.  The winner stopped the timer in 1:04.62.

Owned and trained by Garland Goins, Luyv is a winner for the sixth time in 25 career starts.  She earned $36,000 in the victory and increases her career bankroll to $286,270.

Bred by John R. Cunningham and Chad White, Luyv is a 5-year-old dark bay or brown mare sired by Yockey’s Warrior.  She is out of the Laabity mare Southpine.

Powdered Sugar

Powdered Sugar rode a rail skimming path under jockey Tim Thornton to capture the $60,000 Cajun Miss.  The race for 3-year-olds was contested over the distance of seven furlongs over a fast track.

Icognito Burrito was away quickest but was quickly joined by She’s Magnificent in the run down the backstretch in the Cajun Miss.  Powdered Sugar was able to slide through along the rail to challenge She’s Magnificent as the field went through the opening quarter-mile in 23.41 seconds.  The duo battled through a half-mile split in 46.26 seconds.

Turning for home Powdered Sugar stayed tight to the inner rail and opened a length advantage over She’s Magnificent, with Icognito Burrito and a late closing CC Cola joining the fray.  In the final yards Powdered Sugar was able to hold sway to win by three-quarters of a length over CC Cola.  It was another three-quarters of a length back to She’s Magnificent holding for third.  The winning time for the seven furlongs was 1:24.64.

Trained by Whit Beckman and owned by the team of Michael Eiserman, Earl Silver and Kenneth Fishbein, Powdered Sugar wins for the third time in eight starts.  With the $36,000 winning share, her career earnings now stand at $135,440.
