Scholarship by the Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association Was Transformative
Being awarded a scholarship by the Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association was transformative.
When Vegas T. Curry left Louisiana for Washington, D.C. it was with the goal of securing a position in the homeland security space. Little did he know that most people his age with the equivalent level of education had the same goal. He had to pivot fast. He read about the growing IT skills shortage and how it was impacting organizations in all industries and across the country. He started attending Northern Virginia Community College part-time to build a solid foundation in information and technology.
Sometime later, while visiting his parents in New Orleans, he attended a horse race at the Fair Grounds. That day he was awarded a LTBA scholarship. Those moneys allowed him to complete his IT studies earlier than planned. The knowledge, skills, and abilities he gained via the LTBA scholarship have both secured him a civil service IT position with the U.S. Department of State and put him on a path towards a career in the U.S. Foreign Service.
