Fort Bragg

The St Matthews Overnight Stakes

Between the threatened Churchill Downs Inc. pullout from the Fair Grounds, expanded competition for gambling dollars, and immigration concerns affecting backstretch workers. 2025 was a tumultuous year for the Louisiana Thoroughbred industry. That tumult is inevitably reflected in the state’s stallion colony, which has welcomed only four new stallions for 2026. Among them is Fort Bragg, who is both an attractive and affordable stallion prospect for established breeders and the center of an innovative strategy designed to try to attract new breeders in Louisiana.

A $700,000 yearling from Fasig-Tipton’s 2021 Kentucky October sale, Fort Bragg joined Bob Baffert’s stable as the property of SF Racing, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables, and partners. After breaking his maiden in his third try, taking a Santa Anita maiden special weight over 8.5 furlongs, Fort Bragg finished his juvenile season with a third in the Los Alamitos Futurity (G2) behind future Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner Practical Move. In that race, he outfinished Arabian Lion, who later won the 2023 Woody Stephens Stakes (G1).

Following unplaced finishes in the 2023 San Felipe Stakes (G2) and Curlin Florida Derby (G1), Tim Yakteen (who took over Fort Bragg’s training due to Baffert’s suspension by Churchill Downs Inc.) took Fort Bragg off the Triple Crown trail. After missing by a neck to General Jim in the Pat Day Mile Stakes (G2), the colt (by then back in Baffert’s barn) wheeled back in the Dwyer Stakes (G3) over the same one-mile trip and gamely outdueled Saudi Crown by a nose; two races later, Saudi Crown won the Pennsylvania Derby (G1).

Dropped back to sprint distances, Fort Bragg was clearly off form in the H. Allen Jenkins Memorial Stakes (G1) at Saratoga, in which he was a badly-beaten fourth. He came back to run a good third behind multiple grade 1 winner Dr. Schivel and future Malibu Stakes (G1) winner Speed Boat Beach in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship Stakes (G2), outfinishing Arabian Lion, 2022 Bing Crosby Stakes (G1) winner American Theorem, and multiple sprint grade 2 winner C Z Rocket. He followed up that effort with a sharp win over 6.5 furlongs in a Del Mar optional claimer before encountering traffic problems in the Malibu and ending up sixth.

After the Malibu, Fort Bragg was away from the races for nine months. Following his return, he added a 6-furlong optional claimer at Del Mar and the 6-furlong St. Matthews Overnight Stakes at Churchill Downs (in which he ran the distance in 1:08.04) to his tally from five starts at 4 and 5 before retiring with 11 wins and placings from 17 starts and earnings of $596,915. He was purchased privately by the Round Potrero partnership following the 2025 Keeneland November mixed sale.

Fort Bragg is a son of three-time champion sire Tapit, who has sired everything from grade 1-winning juveniles to four Belmont Stakes (G1) winners during his stud career. His stallion sons include multiple grade 1 winner Constitution, a three-time champion sire in Chile; 2011 champion juvenile male Hansen, a four-time champion sire in South Korea; two-time champion Essential Quality, who ranked third on the 2025 freshman sire list; and 2022 Horse of the Year Flightline, whose first juveniles are being eagerly awaited this year.

Arguably the most brilliant horse raced in the United States since Ghostzapper was burning up the track in 2003-2005, Flightline is out of an Indian Charlie mare and has a Storm Cat mare as his third dam. Fort Bragg is bred along similar lines, with a Storm Cat-line mare as his dam and a daughter of Indian Charlie as his second dam. He is out of juvenile stakes winner March X Press, a daughter of 2012 champion juvenile male Shanghai Bobby and so from the same sire line as seven-time champion sire Into Mischief (whose sire, the Storm Cat grandson Harlan’s Holiday, also sired Shanghai Bobby).

A half sister to another juvenile stakes winner in Harlan’s Honor (by Harlan’s Holiday), March X Press is out of stakes-placed Indian Rush (by Indian Charlie), whose stakes-placed full sister Magger Bags is the dam of 2025 Dahlia Stakes winner Nineteenamendment (by Constitution) and, through her Street Sense daughter Indian Street, is the granddam of 2022 Blue Sparkler Stakes winner Benbang (by Shanghai Bobby). Indian Rush, in turn, is out of the winner Rhapsody Blues (by multiple graded stakes winner Homebuilder, by Mr. Prospector), a half sister to multiple English listed stakes winner Rhapsodist (by Affirmed). Another half sibling to Rhapsody Blues, Blushing Secret (by Blushing John), is the dam of multiple stakes winner Bryceslittlesecret (by Littlebitlively).

A tall (16.2 hands), strong horse with the powerful build and strong hip typically seen among horses purchased with Baffert’s operation in mind, Fort Bragg was quick and handy in spite of his size and was an efficient mover. He should suit mares that need a little more leg and scope added to their foals without losing power and speed. Although he carries a 4x5x5 cross to Mr. Prospector, this should not rule out further line breeding to the great stallion, particularly through sources such as Forty Niner and Gone West as well as Mr. Prospector daughters. Other strains that may be particularly desirable in his mates include Danzig, Relaunch, Halo, and Blushing Groom.

As he enters stud at Robicheaux Ranch in 2026, Fort Bragg will stand at $1,700 to Thoroughbred mares and $1,500 plus Robicheaux’s standard booking fee to Quarter Horse mares. However, Round Potrero is offering a special incentive to breeders of age 35 and younger by waiving the stud fee for Thoroughbred mares sent by breeders in this demographic. The goal is farsighted: to grow the racing and breeding industry by drawing in new breeders and owners who can sustain the sport for decades to come. Helping new breeders reduce their up-front expenses is part of the strategy toward attaining that goal, and so Fort Bragg will be playing a part in trying to put new life into Louisiana breeding, both by growing the pool of participants and, one hopes, through the quality of his future offspring.
