Six college students will each win a $1,000 scholarship in an on-site drawing
NEW ORLEANS, La. — The Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association will celebrate the state’s top homebred horses Saturday, Dec. 12, at Louisiana Champions Day at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots, where seven stakes races for Louisiana-breds will share the card, with a drawing for six $1,000 college scholarships. Additionally, this day will honor our military members and their families with special discounts and drawings as part of the Fari Grounds’ Salute the Military event day. Gates open at noon, and first post is 12:45 p.m.
The stakes program honors seven figures from Louisiana racing:
• Classic — Robby J. Albarado
• Turf — Bernard S. Flint
• Ladies Turf — Patrick Mouton
• Juvenile — Harold J. Delahoussaye
• Sprint — James “Sweet” Hodges
• Ladies Sprint — Howard “Murray” Woodward
• Lassie — Don Stemmans

“Louisiana Champions Day is important because it is our final day of Louisiana-bred championship stakes racing,” said Roger Heitzmann III, secretary/treasurer for the Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association. “These races help determine LTBA’s Horse of the Year and awards and this year there are exceptional horses and breeding programs that have grown to new heights because of our breeders incentives.”
The association will award six $1,000 scholarships by random drawing after the fifth race. Winners must be present in the winner’s circle when their names are announced. Each scholarship will be deposited directly into the student’s account at their college or university.
“Giving back to help college and university students is important to our organization and Board,” said Heitzmann. “The Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association (LTBA) is committed to supporting education by awarding four scholarships to college students. Each scholarship is valued at $1,000. Additionally, The Fair Grounds will present two scholarships, also valued at $1,000 each. Altogether, these scholarships total $6,000, providing significant financial assistance to students pursuing higher education.”
The Marine Corp Reserve Band will perform the national anthem along with providing the honor guard to present the colors prior to the start of the race day.
