GOLFITO VICTORIOUS IN THE $100,000 LOUISIANA LEGACY AT DELTA DOWNS

- JORGE LARA TRAINEE TALLIES SECOND STAKES WIN OF HIS CAREER -

VINTON, LA. – The featured race on Saturday night at Delta Downs was the $100,000 Louisiana Legacy for 2-year-old Louisiana-bred runners competing at seven furlongs. The racing surface came up muddy for the event but that didn’t dampen the spirits of Golfito or his connections as he notched his second career stakes win in the event with jockey Jose Rodriguez in the saddle for owner/breeder Terrell Jarrett, Jr. and trainer Jorge Lara.

Breaking from the inside post position in a field of seven, Golfito helped to set the early pace along with speedster Yo Lion. The pair clicked off early fractions racing nearly side-by-side in 23.60 seconds for the opening quarter mile and 48 seconds for the half mile. As the field entered the second turn, Yo Lion began to wear down and faded while Army Running Bayou took aim at Golfito.

In the homestretch, Golfito held off Army Running Bayou and reported home two lengths in front of his rival while Runningoncloudnine took third, another two lengths behind the runner-up. Golfito’s final running time in the race was 1:27.80.

Golfito has now won three of his four career starts. His other tallies came in the DS Shine Young Futurity at Evangeline Downs in August and a maiden race to begin his career at the same track in June. He earned $60,000 for his win on Saturday, and his bankroll now stands at $148,500.

Bred in Louisiana, Golfito is a 2-year-old bay colt by Carpe Diem, out of the Sharp Humor mare Lady Margots Humor.

Set off at odds of 7-2 by the public, Golfito paid $9.40 to win, $7.20 to place and $3.60 to show. Army Running Bayou was worth $13.20 to place and $5.40 to show. Runningoncloudnine returned $2.60 to show.

Delta Downs will head to the fifth week of racing next Wednesday through Saturday nights, November 4-7. First post time each evening is at 4:40pm.
